The Psalms of Solomon, Chapter 8ΨΑΛΜΟΙ ΣΟΛΟΜΩΝΤΟΣ Η′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Jerusalem's corruption is judged, and lament turns back to God's righteous mercy.

Translation & textual notes

One of the collection's most historically charged laments begins with the sound of war, trumpet, slaughter, and ruin, then rereads the catastrophe as a manifestation of God's righteous judgment. Jerusalem's fall is not portrayed as political accident. The psalm insists that hidden sins, sexual corruption, cultic profanation, and arrogant complicity with impurity had already made the city ripe for exposure. The invader from afar becomes the instrument through which those buried crimes are brought into the open. Yet the poem is not only accusatory. Once God is vindicated in his judgments, the voice of lament turns toward prayer: the same God who judged Israel rightly is asked to turn again in mercy, gather the dispersion, and keep the nations from swallowing up a people who still belong to him. The psalm therefore holds together three crucial Psalms of Solomon themes: confession of guilt, praise of God's justice, and hope for restoration grounded in covenant mercy rather than national innocence.
