The Wisdom of Sirach, Chapter 21ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΕΙΡΑΧ ΚΑ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Repentance, correction, and restrained speech mark the wise and expose fools.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Sirach 21 continues the sapiential training of the surrounding chapters but sharpens its rhetoric through vivid images. Sin is not treated abstractly; it is something to flee like a serpent, a two-edged sword, or a road ending in Hades. The unit then interweaves social observation with theological conviction. God hears the poor, the law stabilizes the wise, and the fear of the Lord brings understanding to completion; by contrast, pride, extortion, ill-gotten building, and lawless company lead toward ruin. A substantial middle section contrasts the teachable with the fool. The wise person's knowledge multiplies like a flood, receives good speech, and speaks in ways weighed and welcomed in the assembly, while the fool cannot hold wisdom, turns away from sound words, and behaves loudly and shamefully in other people's space. The close on satanic cursing and whispering returns the chapter to speech ethics: the slanderer harms his own soul before he harms anyone else. Sirach 21 therefore binds repentance, teachability, social decorum, and speech discipline into a single portrait of wisdom under the fear of the Lord.
