The Wisdom of Sirach, Chapter 22ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΕΙΡΑΧ ΚΒ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Folly disgraces, but loyal friendship and guarded speech preserve honor.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Sirach 22 gathers a series of sayings that move from folly and disgrace into grief, discernment, friendship, and finally a prayer for verbal restraint. Opens with hard comparisons for the sluggard and with domestic shame focused on undisciplined children, especially the daughter whose conduct dishonors father and husband alike. It then turns to the social burden of the fool: teaching him is futile, living near him is exhausting, and mourning for him may outlast mourning for the physically dead because his life spreads damage while it lasts. The latter half is more constructive. Sirach praises the steady heart that does not collapse under pressure, reflects on the fragility and repair of friendship, and contrasts temporary wounds with the near-final breach produced by insult, arrogance, betrayal of secrets, and treachery. The closing petition for a guard on the mouth gathers the chapter's wisdom into prayer. Sirach 22 therefore binds household honor, discernment in companionship, loyal friendship, and disciplined speech into one practical theology of social wisdom.
