Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Sirach 24 is one of the book's theological summits. Wisdom speaks in the first person, praising her own origin, range, indwelling, fruitfulness, and public teaching. The opening lines move from liturgical self-praise into cosmological scope: Wisdom comes from the mouth of the Most High, covers the earth like mist, circles heaven, and walks the deeps. Yet her universal range does not end in abstraction. The Creator commands her to pitch her tent in Jacob, take possession in Israel, and be established in Zion and Jerusalem. The central botanical and aromatic catalog presents Wisdom as a paradisal abundance of cedars, palms, roses, olives, spices, terebinth, and vine. The chapter's decisive interpretive turn arrives when this speaking Wisdom is identified with the book of the covenant and with the Mosaic law as Israel's inheritance. The closing river images then describe Wisdom's inexhaustibility and the teacher's derivative task of irrigating the garden for later generations. Sirach 24 therefore binds creation, election, temple, Torah, and instruction into one unified doctrine of divine Wisdom dwelling among God's people.
