The Wisdom of Sirach, Chapter 29ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΕΙΡΑΧ ΚΘ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Almsgiving fulfills the law, while loans and surety can become bitter burdens.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Sirach 29 moves through several linked economic situations. It begins positively: to lend mercifully to a neighbor in need is akin to keeping the commandments, and returning what is owed in due time belongs to justice. The unit quickly becomes realistic, however, about the ingratitude and evasiveness of many borrowers, who humble themselves while receiving but delay, excuse, or refuse repayment afterward. Sirach then redirects the reader from naive resentment toward instructed mercy. Almsgiving is a safer treasury than gold, and a good surety may risk his life for a neighbor, though suretyship itself has ruined many and driven even strong men into exile and litigation. The last section shifts from lending to lodging. Bread, water, clothing, and shelter are life's fundamentals, and the poor person's modest house is better than luxurious food in another man's home. The humiliation of being a dependent guest, continually reproached and displaced, closes the chapter in a key of social shame. Sirach 29 therefore balances commanded generosity with prudence about debt, warning that mercy must be practiced without romantic blindness about human evasion, economic pressure, and the indignity of dependence.

ὁ ποιῶν ἔλεος δανιεῖ τῷ πλησίον καὶ ὁ ἐπισχύων τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ τηρεῖ ἐντολάς

The one who shows mercy will lend to his neighbor, and the one who strengthens him with his hand keeps the commandments.

Merciful lending as obedience
The unit begins by redefining lending as an act of mercy that fulfills the commandments rather than merely a financial transaction.
