The Wisdom of Sirach, Chapter 30ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΕΙΡΑΧ Λ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Discipline and guarded joy preserve household life and bodily strength.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Sirach 30 is strongly two-part. The opening section concerns sons and discipline, speaking in the hard, unsentimental register common to ancient sapiential pedagogy: the father who truly loves his son corrects him, while indulgence breeds shame, pain, and future regret. Sirach presses the point through images of the untamed horse, the coddled child, and the internal wound the parent suffers when he refuses correction. The second half turns from discipline to health, drawing a sustained contrast between bodily soundness and wasted wealth, between gladness of heart and corrosive sorrow. Here the chapter becomes almost medical in tone: chronic grief shortens life, provokes premature aging, and empties the soul without profit. The section's warning against setting the soul into sorrow does not trivialize suffering; rather, it argues that self-ruin through unchecked heaviness is as dangerous as neglected bodily illness. Sirach 30 therefore joins household formation and self-governance, insisting that wise correction and guarded joy are both life-preserving arts under God.
