The Wisdom of Sirach, Chapter 31ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΕΙΡΑΧ ΛΑ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Wealth and banquets test integrity, measure, and regard for the neighbor.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Sirach 31 is a study in possession and appetite. The first movement reflects on wealth itself: anxiety over riches wastes the body, greed for gold misleads many, and the truly blameless rich person is rare enough to be publicly celebrated. From there the chapter moves to a banquet setting, where the moral question is no longer accumulation but comportment. Sirach teaches restraint of eye, hand, throat, and appetite at a great table, urging self-knowledge, early stopping, and moderation even when abundance is present. The final section concerns wine. Here again the treatment is balanced rather than absolutist. Wine belongs to human gladness when taken in due measure and season, but excess turns into bitterness, rage, injury, and social harm. The closing prohibition against rebuking a neighbor during drinking ties the table back to speech ethics. Sirach 31 therefore connects economic integrity, bodily self-command, and communal tact, insisting that both possession and pleasure must be ruled by reverence and measure.
