The Wisdom of Sirach, Chapter 32ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΕΙΡΑΧ ΛΒ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Social proportion and careful counsel belong to reverent self-command.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Sirach 32 is a compact manual of conduct in gathered company and beyond it. The opening banquet instructions are not mere etiquette. The one placed in charge must serve without self-exaltation, the elder should speak with accuracy and measure, and the young man should compress his speech into little. Music, silence, timing, departure, and blessing all become tests of self-command. From there the chapter broadens from table to life. The one who fears the Lord receives discipline and favor, the hypocrite stumbles in the law, and the sinner bends every rebuke back toward his own will. The final maxims urge deliberation before action, caution on dangerous paths, mistrust of apparently smooth roads, and confidence that believing the law is itself commandment-keeping. Sirach 32 therefore joins decorum, verbal restraint, practical prudence, and reverent obedience into a single portrait of ordered wisdom.
