The Wisdom of Sirach, Chapter 5ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΕΙΡΑΧ Ε′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Do not trust wealth or delay; repent quickly and speak steadily.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Sirach 5 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The first movement attacks false security: money, bodily appetite, imagined autonomy, and a cynical appeal to divine forbearance all tempt the sinner to postpone repentance and to add sin upon sin. Sirach answers that presumption with a theology of both mercy and wrath, warning that sudden judgment can break in before the complacent person turns back. The second half of the chapter shifts from inner presumption to social character, especially speech. The hearer must not be scattered like chaff or walk every path like a double-tongued sinner, but instead remain established in understanding, quick to hear, slow to answer, guarded in speech, and faithful in great and small matters alike. The closing warnings treat gossip, ambush by the tongue, and betrayal of friendship as forms of duplicity that end in shame, reproach, and ruinous reputation. Versification follows the LXX.
