Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Sirach 6 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The unit opens by warning against self-exalting appetite and the self-destructive soul that devours its own fruit. It then develops one of Sirach's richest reflections on friendship, distinguishing flattering speech from loyal counsel, testing a companion before trust, exposing the friend who disappears in distress, and praising the faithful friend as a shelter, treasure, and medicine of life found especially by those who fear the Lord. From verse 18 onward the chapter becomes a sustained exhortation to seek wisdom from youth. Wisdom initially appears hard, restrictive, and hidden, yet the hearer is urged to shoulder her bonds, search her out, stand among elders, and meditate continually on the Lord's commands. The reward for perseverance is rest, glory, adornment, and a settled heart whose desire for wisdom is granted by God. The irregular verse numbering reflects the traditional Greek versification.
