The Wisdom of Sirach, Chapter 7ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΕΙΡΑΧ Ζ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Practical godliness orders justice, kinship, mercy, and death's remembrance.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Sirach 7 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. This unit is a dense anthology of sapiential imperatives. It opens with warnings against sowing injustice, seeking status, flattering oneself before rulers, multiplying sin, trusting gifts, neglecting prayer, or mocking the bitter in soul. From there Sirach moves through a wide field of ordinary obligations: truthfulness, labor, humility before divine wrath, loyalty to friend, spouse, servant, and children, reverence toward father, mother, priest, and temple obligations, and mercy toward poor, mourners, and the sick. It closes by placing all these acts under the horizon of the end, where remembrance of one's last things becomes a guard against sin. The irregular verse numbering reflects the traditional Greek versification.
