The Wisdom of Sirach, Chapter 8ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΕΙΡΑΧ Η′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Prudence avoids powerful quarrels and reckless entanglements.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Sirach 8 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. This unit is a sustained exercise in prudential social wisdom. Sirach warns against direct collision with the powerful, the wealthy, the abusive, the impulsive, and the foolish, not because justice is denied, but because power, temperament, and circumstance make some conflicts spiritually and materially ruinous. He pairs those cautions with positive habits: respect the penitent and the aged, remember mortality, apprentice yourself to sages and elders, and keep far from obligations that exceed your means. The result is a portrait of wisdom as disciplined self-limitation in speech, friendship, money, travel, counsel, and self-disclosure. The irregular verse numbering reflects the traditional Greek versification.
