Tobit 4 is the book's great paternal instruction chapter. Triggered by Tobit's remembrance of the unrecovered deposit and by his expectation of death, the chapter gathers family duty, almsgiving, sexual discipline, economic justice, humility, prudence, prayer, and the fear of God into a single inheritance of wisdom for Tobias. Its importance lies in the way it fuses moral exhortation with narrative purpose: the same speech that sends Tobias toward Gabael also tells the reader how Tobit's world understands righteousness.
