Theme

Israel's merciful testing and Egypt's measured punishment begin the book's long comparison of providence and judgment.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Wisdom of Solomon 11 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter opens the long retrospective comparison between God's treatment of Israel and his judgment on Egypt. It begins by recalling how the holy people were guided through the wilderness, defended against enemies, and given healing water from the rock, while the same sphere of need became punishment for their adversaries (11:1-8). The argument then draws the contrast more sharply: Israel's trials were paternal discipline within mercy, but the ungodly were examined like subjects under a severe king and tormented by hearing of the salvation they had mocked (11:9-14). From there the chapter turns to the plague of irrational animals, presenting it as a fitting recompense for irrational worship and as an enacted lesson in the principle that sinners are punished by the very things through which they sin (11:15-16). The next movement insists that God could have destroyed the wicked in many overwhelming ways, yet chose measured judgment instead, ordering all things by number, weight, and proportion (11:17-22). The close grounds that restraint theologically: the Creator loves what he has made, overlooks sins to invite repentance, preserves beings by his will, and spares all because all things belong to him, the Master who loves life (11:23-26).
