The Wisdom of Solomon, Chapter 13ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΟΛΟΜΩΝΤΟΣ ΙΓ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Visible beauty should have led the mind to the Creator, but idolatry traps worship in crafted things.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Wisdom of Solomon 13 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006); the ancient text itself is public domain, and the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter unfolds in two linked movements. First, it rebukes those who infer divinity from the beauty, power, and order of the visible world yet fail to move from creation to the Creator. Then it turns to a sharper satire of crafted idols, exposing the irrationality of praying to images fashioned by human hands, secured in place because they cannot help themselves, and consulted for life, travel, health, and success. The argument is philosophically refined but rhetorically pointed: visible splendor should have become a path toward God, yet idolatry arrests thought at the level of the made thing and treats dependence itself as deity.

μάταιοι μὲν γὰρ πάντες ἄνθρωποι φύσει οἷς παρῆν θεοῦ ἀγνωσία καὶ ἐκ τῶν ὁρωμένων ἀγαθῶν οὐκ ἴσχυσαν εἰδέναι τὸν ὄντα οὔτε τοῖς ἔργοις προσέχοντες ἐπέγνωσαν τὸν τεχνίτην

For all men are vain by nature in whom there was ignorance of God, and from the good things that are seen they were not strong enough to know the One who is, nor by attending to his works did they recognize the craftsman.

Thesisasyndeton
The chapter begins with a philosophical indictment: the visible order was sufficient to point beyond itself, yet ignorance remained fixed on appearances.
