The Wisdom of Solomon, Chapter 14ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΟΛΟΜΩΝΤΟΣ ΙΔ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Wood, ships, carved images, and civic disorder expose false worship as a corruption of both thought and society.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Wisdom of Solomon 14 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006); the ancient text itself is public domain, and the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter resumes the wood imagery of the previous discussion but sharpens its argument in two directions. First, it contrasts human craft with divine providence: even a fragile vessel survives the sea because God's governance opens a way through the waters. Then it traces the rise, spread, and social consequences of idolatry, from memorial images and royal flattery to murder, sexual corruption, false prophecy, perjury, and civic disorder. Read as a whole, Wisdom 14 is not merely a satire on idols; it is a genealogy of misdirected worship, showing that false images deform both thought about God and the moral life built around that thought.
