Theme

Wisdom 15 continues the anti-idolatry argument by setting the living God over against the vanity of fabricated cult objects.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Wisdom of Solomon 15 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Wisdom 15 continues the anti-idolatry argument by setting the living God over against the vanity of fabricated cult objects. The chapter first confesses God's kindness, truth, patience, and merciful government, then turns to the psychology and economics of idolatry: appetite for visible forms, competition in craft, profit from deception, and a life treated as play. Its center is the potter parable, where the same clay yields vessels of ordinary use and, absurdly, a so-called god fashioned by a creature who himself came from dust and soon returns to it. The final movement broadens the indictment to the oppressing nations, whose idols are shown to be powerless pseudo-bodies and even inferior to the living creatures they imitate. Read as a whole, the chapter argues that false worship is not only theological error but a degradation of the maker, the worshiper, and the social order shaped by them.
