Theme

Wisdom of Solomon 16 continues the book's comparative reading of Egypt's punishments and Israel's deliverances, dwelling especially on the pedagogical logic of divine provision.

Translation & textual notes

Wisdom of Solomon 16 continues the book's comparative reading of Egypt's punishments and Israel's deliverances, dwelling especially on the pedagogical logic of divine provision. The chapter contrasts beast-inflicted torment with quail, serpent-bites with symbolic healing, human remedies with God's saving word, and destructive weather with manna that adapts itself to the needs of the faithful. Throughout, creation is portrayed as a servant under divine command: the same elements that judge the ungodly are moderated, redirected, or transformed for the benefit of God's people. The chapter's closing reflection presses the theological point beyond miracle as such: human beings do not finally live by agricultural process alone, but by the sustaining word of God received with gratitude.
