The Wisdom of Solomon, Chapter 7ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΟΛΟΜΩΝΤΟΣ Ζ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Royal mortality becomes the backdrop for a dazzling praise of wisdom as gift, radiance, and renewing power.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Wisdom of Solomon 7 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter is one of the book's great first-person meditations on wisdom. Its opening movement levels royal pretension by insisting that even a king enters life through the same mortal processes as everyone else and shares the same common exit (7:1-6). On that basis the speaker explains that wisdom was not an inherited ornament of rank but a divine gift received through prayer, and he therefore values her above power, wealth, beauty, and even ordinary light (7:7-12). The next section turns from preference to vocation: wisdom's riches are to be shared openly, and only God can grant speech worthy of such gifts, since he governs both understanding and true knowledge of creation (7:13-21). The chapter culminates in a dense catalogue of wisdom's qualities and images: she is intelligent, pure, beneficent, all-pervading, the breath of God's power, the radiance of eternal light, and the image of divine goodness itself (7:22-26). The close then stresses wisdom's continuing efficacy in history: remaining one, she renews all things, fashions God's friends and prophets, outranks the lights of heaven, and cannot be overcome by wickedness (7:27-30).
