The Book of Zechariah, Chapter 4ΖΑΧΑΡΙΑΣ Δ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Lampstand, olive trees, and the word to Zerubbabel make the temple's future rest on the Lord's Spirit.

Translation & textual notes

The night-vision sequence is developed by pairing temple imagery with a direct word to Zerubbabel. The Greek presents a golden lampstand with its bowl, lamps, channels, and two olive trees, then explicitly interprets the vision through the oracle 'not by great power nor by might, but by my Spirit.' The Septuagint also preserves several distinctive turns that deserve to remain visible in translation, such as the enigmatic cry over the stone in 4:7, the 'tin plumb-stone' in Zerubbabel's hand in 4:10, and the final description of the two anointed figures as 'sons of richness.' The chapter therefore reads as both temple-vision and political encouragement, with the LXX's own symbolic vocabulary left in place rather than flattened into later paraphrase.

καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν ὁ ἄγγελος ὁ λαλῶν ἐν ἐμοὶ καὶ ἐξήγειρέν με ὃν τρόπον ὅταν ἐξεγερθῇ ἄνθρωπος ἐξ ὕπνου αὐτοῦ

And the angel who was speaking in me returned and awoke me, as when a man is awakened out of his sleep.

Renewed vision settingasyndeton
The new vision begins with reanimation. Zechariah is not merely addressed but awakened again into prophetic perception by the interpreting angel.
