The Book of Zechariah, Chapter 5ΖΑΧΑΡΙΑΣ Ε′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The covenant curse flies through the land while lawlessness is sealed up and carried away to Babylon.

Translation & textual notes

Two linked night-visions appear here: the flying sickle that carries the covenant curse through the land, and the measuring vessel in which lawlessness is personified as a woman and removed to Babylon. The Septuagint's diction keeps the judicial force of the vision in the foreground, especially in the language of the curse entering the thief's house and of wickedness being carried away and established elsewhere. The chapter's images therefore move from exposure to expulsion: sin is first named and judged within the land, then contained and transported away from the restored community.

καὶ ἐπέστρεψα καὶ ἦρα τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς μου καὶ εἶδον καὶ ἰδοὺ δρέπανον πετόμενον

And I turned back and lifted my eyes and saw, and behold, a flying sickle.

Vision reportasyndeton
The fifth chapter opens with another visual turn in the night sequence. The prophet’s lifted eyes mark a new symbolic scene whose meaning will be unfolded by dialogue.
