Theme

Moab seeks refuge, yet pride still brings measured ruin.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 16 continues the Moab oracle by shifting from raw lament to counsel, refuge, and the measured collapse of Moab's pride. The Greek chapter begins with unstable images of creeping creatures, displaced birds, and fugitives seeking shelter, then turns toward the counter-image of a mercifully established throne in the tent of David. That Davidic note is set over against Moab's insolence, so the center of the chapter contrasts righteous rule with arrogant self-exaltation. The latter half returns to mourning, especially over fields and vineyards, but the lament is now spoken with a more intimate register: the speaker's inward parts resound like a harp for Moab. The close is characteristically Septuagintal in its combination of failed cult, exhausted prayer, and a fixed three-year horizon for the humiliation of Moab's glory. The annotations below therefore read the chapter as both compassionate lament and settled sentence, with special attention to the LXX's distinct imagery and cadence.
