The Book of Isaiah, Chapter 27ΗΣΑΪΑΣ ΚΖ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The dragon falls, Jacob is purged, and the scattered are gathered to worship.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 27 closes the cluster of judgment-and-restoration oracles with a strikingly Septuagintal sequence: the Lord's sword falls on the dragon, a desirable vineyard is sung over, Jacob's guilt is removed through the shattering of idolatrous altars, and the dispersed are finally gathered back for worship. The Greek text preserves the chapter's oscillation between threat and consolation, yet it also introduces distinctive turns of phrase, including the fortified-city imagery in verse 3 and the geographical sweep from the Euphrates channel to Rhinocorura in verse 12. Across the chapter the LXX presents judgment as measured rather than annihilating, so that purification, fruitfulness, and liturgical return become the goal of divine action.

On that day God will bring his holy and great and strong sword against the dragon, the fleeing serpent, against the dragon, the crooked serpent, and he will slay the dragon.

Divine combat announcedasyndeton
The chapter opens with a day-of-the-Lord scene in which God himself advances against the mythic dragon. The repeated serpent imagery frames the enemy as both evasive and twisted before the final act of slaying.

On that day there will be a fair vineyard, a desirable one; begin the song over her.

Vineyard song introducedasyndeton
After the dragon's defeat the oracle turns to the image of a beautiful vineyard. The imperative-like closing phrase invites a song or responsorial address over the restored vine.

I am a strong city, a city under siege; in vain will I water it, for by night it will be taken, and by day the wall will fall.

Fortified city imageryasyndeton
The Septuagint unexpectedly voices the image in terms of a strong besieged city rather than staying only with vineyard language. The verse blends care, futility, capture, and collapsing walls into a tense picture of vulnerable protection.

There is no one who has not laid hold of her. Who will set me to guard stubble in a field? Because of this warfare I have rejected her; therefore the Lord God did everything that he appointed; I am burned up.

Judgment explainedasyndeton
The speaker reflects on unavoidable seizure and refuses the absurd task of guarding dry stubble in open country. The verse grounds the city's burning in divinely ordered judgment amid hostile conflict.

Therefore the lawlessness of Jacob will be taken away, and this is his blessing: when I remove his sin, when they make all the stones of the altars like pulverized lime, then their trees and their idols shall certainly not remain, cut down like a distant thicket.
