The Book of Isaiah, Chapter 28ΗΣΑΪΑΣ ΚΗ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Ephraim's proud crown and Jerusalem's false refuge fail before Zion's cornerstone.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 28 begins with a woe against Ephraim's proud crown and then turns sharply toward Jerusalem's rulers, whose false securities collapse before the Lord's storm and the cornerstone he lays in Zion. The Septuagint repeatedly sharpens the rhetoric through compressed aphorisms, unusual diction, and proverbial turns: drunken priests and prophets stagger, the hearers mock with clipped repetition, and the oracle answers with foreign speech, a tested stone, and the annulment of any pact with death. The chapter's final movement shifts into agrarian wisdom, arguing that the God of judgment also governs proportion, timing, and method. In the Greek chapter, therefore, terrifying judgment and measured divine pedagogy stand side by side.

Woe to the crown of pride, the hirelings of Ephraim, the flower fallen from glory upon the summit of the fat mountain, those who are drunk without wine.

Woe against proud Ephraimasyndeton
The chapter opens by collapsing Ephraim's public splendor into a fading garland on a rich hilltop. Their intoxication is moral and spiritual as much as literal, since they reel even apart from wine.
