The Book of Isaiah, Chapter 29ΗΣΑΪΑΣ ΚΘ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Ariel is besieged, stupor is exposed, and the blind finally see.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 29 in the Septuagint binds the Ariel oracle, the polemic against spiritual stupor, and the promise of reversal into a single movement from siege to renewed perception. The Greek keeps Jerusalem under the symbolic name Ariel, then describes her humiliation in earthy, almost necromantic terms: her voice sinks to the dust while the nations that press against her dissolve like dream-food that cannot satisfy hunger. The middle of the chapter shifts from military pressure to epistemic judgment, portraying revelation as a sealed book and worship as lip-service detached from the heart. From verse 17 onward the chapter turns sharply toward restoration: deaf hear, blind see, the poor rejoice, and Jacob's children sanctify the Holy One of Israel. Several lines in the Greek are free or interpretive renderings rather than tight lexical mirrors of the Hebrew, so the notes below follow the LXX's own rhetoric of collapse, blindness, and transformed understanding.
