Theme

Judah's Egyptian alliance fails, yet mercy waits beyond judgment.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 30 in the Septuagint moves from Judah's failed diplomacy with Egypt to a broad theology of judgment and mercy. The first movement mocks the southern alliance as expensive futility, describing the desert embassy and insisting that Egypt offers only shame. The chapter then exposes the people's moral posture: they reject hard prophecy, prefer pleasing delusion, and therefore face collapse like a shattered pot or a breached wall. Yet the chapter does not end in ruin. From verse 18 onward the Greek turns toward compassion, guidance, agricultural renewal, and cosmic healing, while the closing stanzas portray the Lord himself coming in fiery speech to break Assyria and to expose every false security. The Septuagint's diction is vivid and at points expansive, especially in its treatment of delusion, liturgical imagery, and the final burning ravine, so the annotations below privilege the Greek chapter as a coherent theological performance in its own right.
