Theme

Comfort sounds in the wilderness because the incomparable God comes to shepherd.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 40 marks a decisive turn in the book from royal crisis narrative to a great liturgy of consolation. The chapter opens with repeated commands to comfort God's people and to speak to Jerusalem's heart, announcing that her humiliation has been fulfilled and her sin released. From there the Greek text moves through the famous wilderness proclamation, cosmic leveling, and the revelation of the Lord's glory to all flesh. The middle of the chapter contrasts mortal frailty with the permanence of the divine word and then presents the herald of good news announcing the arrival of Israel's God as king and shepherd. The latter half turns to a sustained theological disputation: no creature can measure creation, instruct the Lord, compare with him, or sustain an idol beside him. The closing strophe answers Zion's despair by insisting on God's unwearied sovereignty and his power to renew the exhausted. Throughout, the Septuagint's diction gives this chapter a strongly liturgical and theological cast, especially in its address to priests, its rendering of salvation language, and its climactic promise that those who wait for God will exchange weakness for strength.
