Theme

The servant brings justice, and the Lord's new praise rises over blind Israel.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 42 introduces the servant in an overtly restorative and judicial frame. In the Greek text the servant is explicitly identified with Jacob and Israel, yet the portrait remains concentrated enough to sustain the servant as a representative figure who bears the people's vocation. The chapter balances tenderness and force: the servant will not crush the bruised reed, yet the Lord himself goes forth like a warrior and finally explains Judah's devastation as covenant judgment. A notable sequence links justice, illumination, and release from prison, so that the servant's mission answers both the blindness of the nations and the blindness of Israel. The chapter therefore works on two levels at once, offering a missionary charter for the chosen servant and a severe diagnosis of the people's failure to hear the law of the God whose glory cannot be transferred to idols.
