Theme

The Lord redeems Israel through the waters and claims history for himself alone.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 43 turns from accusation to consolation without softening the Lord's absolute sovereignty. The Greek chapter is shaped by redemption language, witness language, and new-exodus imagery: the God who once opened a way through the sea now promises another saving intervention that will gather Jacob from every direction and even make the wilderness hospitable. The middle of the chapter stages a juridical contest in which the nations cannot produce witnesses, while Israel and the servant are summoned to testify that the Lord alone saves. Yet the closing unit refuses sentimentality. The people who were formed for praise have burdened God with sins instead of honoring him with worship, so forgiveness appears not as denial of guilt but as a sovereign act of grace issuing from the same Lord who also handed Jacob over to reproach.

And now thus says the Lord God, the one who made you, Jacob, the one who formed you, Israel: Do not fear, because I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are mine.

Reassurance Oracleasyndeton
The chapter opens with covenant reassurance: the creator and redeemer of Jacob names his people as his own and therefore forbids fear.
