The Book of Isaiah, Chapter 5ΗΣΑΪΑΣ Ε′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The ruined vineyard yields woe, and Judah is summoned to invasion.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 5 is structured around the vineyard song and the sequence of woe oracles that flow out of it. The Septuagint preserves the agricultural and judicial force of the chapter with vivid terms for the hedge, tower, vat, trampling, and the measured disappointment of the owner, then turns explicitly from metaphor to accusation when the vineyard is identified as Israel and Judah. Particularly striking in the Greek is the contrast between what the Lord sought and what he found: justice gives way to lawlessness, righteousness to a cry. The latter half of the chapter then unfolds the social anatomy of that failure in greedy land-taking, intoxicated revelry, moral inversion, bribery, and confident contempt for prophetic warning, before climaxing in the image of a far-off nation summoned as the instrument of judgment.

Let me now sing for my beloved a song of my beloved concerning my vineyard: my beloved had a vineyard on a horn, in a fertile place.

Song openingasyndeton
