Theme

The Lord rejects performative fasting and calls for justice that restores.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 58 is the Septuagint's sustained critique of performative piety. The chapter begins with a trumpet-like accusation: the people seek God daily and demand righteous judgment while their fasting conceals exploitation, violence, and self-interest. The LXX then defines the fast the Lord actually chooses in concrete social terms: loose unjust bonds, release the crushed, feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, clothe the naked, and do not hide from your own kin. From that obedient mercy flow light, healing, answered prayer, restored ruins, Sabbath delight, and covenant inheritance. The chapter therefore binds worship, justice, and restoration together so tightly that true nearness to God can never be separated from merciful action toward the vulnerable.

Cry aloud in strength, and do not spare; lift up your voice like a trumpet, and announce to my people their sins and to the house of Jacob their lawless deeds.
