The anointed herald proclaims release, restoration, priestly honor, and bridal joy.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 61 is the Servant-Zion proclamation chapter in which Spirit-anointing, good news, release, healing, restoration, priestly dignity, covenant permanence, and bridal joy are woven into one programmatic oracle. The Septuagint is especially important because its wording stands behind Luke 4:18-19: πνεῦμα κυρίου ἐπ' ἐμέ, ἔχρισέν με, εὐαγγελίσασθαι πτωχοῖς, κηρύξαι αἰχμαλώτοις ἄφεσιν, and the acceptable year of the Lord. The Greek also sharpens the chapter's exchange imagery by setting glory over against ashes, oil of gladness over mourning, and the garment of praise over faintness, so that restoration is presented as liturgical and communal transfiguration. The chapter then turns outward from the herald's commission to Zion's rebuilding, the service of foreigners, the people's priestly status, and the everlasting covenant that secures their posterity. Versification follows the LXX.
