The Book of Job, Chapter 13ΙΩΒ ΙΓ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Job 13 continues Job's reply to his companions, but the chapter sharpens in two directions at once. First, Job turns on the friends as fraudulent defenders of God.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Job 13 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Job 13 continues Job's reply to his companions, but the chapter sharpens in two directions at once. First, Job turns on the friends as fraudulent defenders of God. They present themselves as wise physicians, yet Job calls them unjust healers who speak deceit on God's behalf, showing partiality where true reverence should have produced silence. The first half of the chapter is therefore forensic and polemical: Job insists he is not intellectually beneath them, demands that they listen, and warns that the God they flatter will expose their false advocacy. Second, the chapter becomes one of the boldest direct addresses to God in the book. Job declares that he will speak before the Lord even at mortal risk, because deceit cannot stand in God's presence and because his only hope lies in bringing his case openly. He asks only for two mercies: that God's hand be restrained and that divine terror not overwhelm him. From there the speech turns to plea and lament. If God calls, Job will answer; if God speaks, Job will respond. Yet Job also asks why God hides his face, counts old sins against him, pursues one as fragile as a windblown leaf, and keeps him confined like a decaying wineskin or a moth-eaten garment. The chapter therefore combines courtroom daring, trust under threat, and profound human fragility, preparing for Job's continuing struggle to understand how divine justice can feel so adversarial to the sufferer who still seeks God.
