Theme

This chapter opens Eliphaz's second speech, and its rhetoric is markedly harder than his first.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Job 15 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. This chapter opens Eliphaz's second speech, and its rhetoric is markedly harder than his first. He begins by accusing Job of answering with windy and useless words, then mocks any claim Job might make to primordial wisdom or privileged access to the divine council. From there Eliphaz restates the familiar wisdom premise that no mortal can be pure before God, not even the heavens in comparison with him. The long closing movement appeals to inherited wisdom in order to depict the restless terror, social ruin, and fruitless abundance of the ungodly. The result is not a fresh explanation of Job's suffering but a forceful reapplication of a fixed doctrine: wickedness inevitably carries its own judgment within it.
