Theme

Job 20 is Zophar's fierce reply to Job, and it is organized around one controlling claim: the prosperity of the wicked is brief, deceptive, and self-destructive.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Job 20 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Job 20 is Zophar's fierce reply to Job, and it is organized around one controlling claim: the prosperity of the wicked is brief, deceptive, and self-destructive. Zophar begins by reacting personally to Job's words, insisting that his own understanding compels an answer. He then appeals to what he presents as an old and settled truth from the beginning of humanity: the joy of the ungodly rises quickly and collapses just as quickly. The middle of the chapter unfolds this in vivid bodily imagery. Evil is first sweet in the mouth, hidden under the tongue, but later becomes venom in the belly; wealth gathered unjustly is vomited back up; the wicked feast only to find their appetite turned into anguish. The speech then moves from inward corruption to outward judgment: weapons, terrors, consuming fire, exposed iniquity, and ruin of house and possessions all converge on the wicked person. Zophar's rhetoric is absolute and didactic. He offers no space for ambiguity, delay, or counterexample; the fall of the wicked is presented as inevitable, total, and divinely apportioned. Within the book, that certainty matters because it directly contests Job's lived experience and becomes part of the tension the reader must judge.
