Theme

This chapter is one of Job's most intense replies. He begins by protesting the cruelty of his companions and by tracing his ruined condition back to God's assault upon him.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Job 19 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. This chapter is one of Job's most intense replies. He begins by protesting the cruelty of his companions and by tracing his ruined condition back to God's assault upon him. The middle of the chapter widens that ruin into total social abandonment: brothers, household, servants, wife, and intimates all recoil from him while his body itself decays. Yet the speech does not end in collapse. Job turns from pleas for pity to the wish that his words be permanently inscribed, and then to the celebrated confession that his deliverer lives and will stand upon the earth. The final verses therefore combine confidence and warning, as Job tells his friends that they too must fear judgment.
