Job 27 resumes Job's discourse with a solemn oath of integrity.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Job 27 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Job 27 resumes Job's discourse with a solemn oath of integrity. He swears by the living Lord, even while saying that this very Lord has judged him harshly and embittered his life, and on that basis refuses to let his lips speak falsehood or concede the friends' account of him. The first half of the chapter therefore functions as an ethical self-vindication: as long as breath remains in him, he will not surrender his innocence or say that the friends are right. The second half pivots from self-defense to instruction. Job asks what hope remains for the ungodly when distress comes, whether God hears his cry, and whether he can stand before God with confidence. From there the chapter unfolds a compact portrait of the wicked person's portion: children exposed to slaughter and begging, widows unpitied, wealth amassed only to pass into righteous hands, and a house as fragile as moth-work or spider-web. The close portrays sudden disappearance under night, heat, wind, and public scorn. Read together, the chapter binds Job's refusal to lie about his own integrity with his sober acknowledgment that the end of the wicked really is ruin.
