Job 29 is the great backward glance of Job's final self-defense.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Job 29 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Job 29 is the great backward glance of Job's final self-defense. After the sharper juridical protests of the earlier chapters, he now remembers the ordered world that once seemed to surround him: divine light over his head, household abundance, public honor at the city gate, and a reputation grounded not in mere prestige but in concrete acts of justice. The chapter moves from prosperity, to civic authority, to social righteousness, and then to the confidence that such honor would continue. That movement matters because chapter 30 will reverse it point by point. In the Septuagint form the imagery of butter, milk, enthronement, and consoling speech makes Job's former life appear almost regal, yet the center of the remembrance is moral rather than luxurious. He was blessed because he rescued the poor, searched out unknown cases, broke the power of the unjust, and became eyes, feet, and father to the weak. The chapter therefore preserves Job's claim that his lost honor once rested on visible righteousness and beneficence, not on hidden wickedness.
