Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Job 36 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. In this third Elihu speech the younger speaker presses his case one step further. He asks Job to bear with him because he still has words on God’s behalf, and he presents himself as one who will bring knowledge from afar in order to vindicate divine justice. The first half of the chapter argues that God’s governance of human suffering is pedagogical rather than arbitrary: he does not preserve the wicked indefinitely, he upholds the cause of the poor, and when the righteous are bound in affliction he uses that pressure to expose their deeds and call them back from injustice. Those who hear and serve finish their days in good things; those who refuse instruction perish in stubborn ignorance. Elihu then warns Job not to turn affliction into rebellion or to prefer anger, ransom, or self-will over teachability. The chapter’s second half shifts into praise of God’s overwhelming power. Elihu moves from moral government to cosmic government, urging Job to remember the greatness of God’s works, especially in rain, clouds, sea, light, and storm. Divine transcendence is no abstraction here: the same Lord who disciplines persons also governs the weather that judges peoples and feeds creation. This chapter therefore bridges the argument about suffering and the imminent theophanic storm by teaching Job to read both chastening and creation as arenas of God’s unmastered wisdom.
