Theme

The day of the Lord summons repentance and opens into restoration.

Translation & textual notes

Joel 2 develops the day-of-the-Lord alarm from military and cosmic imagery into a liturgy of repentance and a promise of restoration. The chapter first portrays an overwhelming invading host whose advance shakes land and sky, then turns to the Lord's summons for heart-rending return, priestly intercession, and finally divine pity that reverses famine, shame, and devastation. The movement is deliberately covenantal: terror yields to repentance, repentance to mercy, and mercy to renewed abundance and the public knowledge that the Lord dwells in the midst of Israel.
