Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Leviticus 15 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs–Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Leviticus 15 is a tightly structured priestly torah on uncleanness arising from genital discharges, organized as a chiastic quartet bracketed by a divine commission (vv. 1–2) and a double subscription (vv. 32–33): the man with an abnormal discharge (ὁ γονορρυής, vv. 2–15), the normal male emission of seed (κοίτη σπέρματος, vv. 16–18), the menstruant woman (ἡ ἄφεδρος, vv. 19–24), and the woman with a prolonged flow of blood (ῥύσις αἵματος, vv. 25–30), the abnormal cases (man's discharge, woman's hemorrhage) framing the normal ones (emission, menstruation). The LXX renders the technical Hebrew זָב ('one who flows') with the coined adjective-noun γονορρυής ('seed-flowing one', from γόνος + ῥέω), and the menstrual state נִדָּה with ἄφεδρος / ἄφεδρον (lit. 'the sitting-apart', the seclusion). The recurring purification refrain — πλυνεῖ τὰ ἱμάτια … καὶ λούσεται ὕδατι καὶ ἀκάθαρτος ἔσται ἕως ἑσπέρας ('he shall wash his garments and bathe in water and be unclean until evening') — knits the chapter together with liturgical regularity (vv. 5–8, 10–11, 16, 21–22, 27). The contagion-logic is precisely calibrated: the unclean person renders unclean the bed (κοίτη), the seat / vessel (σκεῦος), the saddle (ἐπίσαγμα ὄνου, v. 9), and anyone who touches them (ὁ ἁπτόμενος). Of special note is the woman ῥέουσα αἵματι / αἱμορροοῦσα (vv. 19, 33) and the prolonged ῥύσις αἵματος of vv. 25–30: this is the precise contamination-framework that the Synoptic hemorrhaging woman (ἡ οὖσα ἐν ῥύσει αἵματος, Mark 5:25; cf. Lev 15:25 LXX γυνὴ ἐὰν ῥέῃ ῥύσει αἵματος) transgresses when she touches Jesus' garment — and where the Levitical logic flows from clean to unclean (touch defiles), the Markan reversal has cleansing power flow from Jesus to her (δύναμις ἐξελθοῦσα). The dual purification offering of two turtledoves or two young pigeons (δύο τρυγόνας ἢ δύο νεοσσοὺς περιστερῶν, vv. 14, 29), one for a sin-offering (περὶ ἁμαρτίας) and one for a whole burnt offering (εἰς ὁλοκαύτωμα), is the same low-cost provision Mary brings at the Presentation (Luke 2:24). The chapter's theological center is v. 31: Israel must be kept reverent (εὐλαβεῖς) lest they die ἐν τῷ μιαίνειν αὐτοὺς τὴν σκηνήν μου τὴν ἐν αὐτοῖς — the holiness of the indwelling sanctuary, threatened by accumulated impurity, is the reason the discharge-laws matter at all. Throughout, the binary καθαρός / ἀκάθαρτος ('clean / unclean') governs status, and the verbs συντρίβω ('be shattered', of porous earthenware, v. 12) and νίπτω / πλύνω / λούω (the threefold vocabulary of rinsing, laundering, and bathing) mark the gradations of contamination and its remedy.

New divine speech-unit (main narrative)καὶ ἐλάλησεν κύριος
The formula καὶ ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν (here extended to καὶ Ααρων) is the standard Levitical introduction to a new priestly torah, rendering וַיְדַבֵּר יהוה אֶל; the inclusion of Aaron alongside Moses is characteristic of the purity-laws, where the priest is the operative authority for distinguishing clean from unclean (cf. Lev 11:1; 13:1; 14:33). The participle λέγων (rendering לֵאמֹר) opens the quotation frame.

Commissioned promulgation: the law's protasis-apodosis case formula beginsλάλησον … καὶ ἐρεῖς
The doubled command λάλησον … καὶ ἐρεῖς ('speak … and you shall say') is a standard LXX legislative opener. The distributive ἀνδρὶ ἀνδρί ('man by man / any man whatever') renders the Hebrew distributive repetition אִישׁ אִישׁ; with the conditional relative ᾧ ἐὰν γένηται it frames the first case-law of the chapter: the man with an abnormal genital discharge. The apodosis ἡ ῥύσις αὐτοῦ ἀκάθαρτός ἐστιν states the verdict.

And this is the law of his uncleanness: one discharging an emission from his body out of the discharge by which his body is constituted through the discharge — this is his uncleanness in him. All the days of the discharge of his body, by which his body is constituted through the discharge, it is his uncleanness.

Definitional elaboration of the verdict (legal heading)καὶ οὗτος ὁ νόμος
The heading οὗτος ὁ νόμος ('this is the law') is a Levitical summary-marker (cf. v. 32). The verse is notoriously convoluted in the LXX, rendering a difficult Hebrew clause about whether the discharge runs or is blocked; the LXX twice repeats the puzzling συνέστηκεν τὸ σῶμα … διὰ τῆς ῥύσεως ('his body is constituted/congested through the discharge'), apparently describing the morbid condition whether the flux flows freely or is obstructed. The refrain πᾶσαι αἱ ἡμέραι ('all the days') stresses that the impurity endures for the whole duration of the discharge.

The two parallel clauses (πᾶσα κοίτη … πᾶν σκεῦος) with their resumptive ἐπ᾿ αὐτῆς / ἐπ᾿ αὐτό (a Hebraizing pleonastic pronoun after the relative) establish the pattern repeated for the menstruant in vv. 20–23. Secondary contagion + purification refrain (first occurrence)καὶ ἄνθρωπος ὃς ἂν …
The chapter's signature purification refrain debuts here and recurs almost verbatim through vv. 5–11, 21–22, 27: πλυνεῖ τὰ ἱμάτια … καὶ λούσεται ὕδατι καὶ ἀκάθαρτος ἔσται ἕως ἑσπέρας ('wash garments + bathe + unclean until evening'). The three components — laundering, bathing, and a sunset waiting-period — define the standard one-day remedy for a derivative (touch-transmitted) impurity. The conditional relative ὃς ἂν ἅψηται introduces the second-order rule: contact with the contaminated bed itself defiles.

Turn to restoration (δέ): the seven-day reckoning and cleansingἐὰν δὲ καθαρισθῇ …
The contrastive δέ pivots from contagion to restoration. Once the flux ceases (καθαρισθῇ … ἐκ τῆς ῥύσεως), the man counts seven days (ἐξαριθμήσεται … ἑπτὰ ἡμέρας) toward purification, then launders and bathes the whole body, and is declared clean (καθαρὸς ἔσται). The seven-day count parallels the menstruant's seven days (vv. 19, 24) and the hemorrhaging woman's (v. 28), establishing the symmetry of the chapter's two abnormal cases.

On the eighth day (the day after the seven-day count) the man brings the offering of the poor — two turtledoves or two young pigeons — to the tent of meeting and hands them to the priest. This same low-cost provision recurs for the hemorrhaging woman (v. 29) and is what the Holy Family offers at Jesus' presentation (Luke 2:24, citing Lev 12:8). New section (C): the menstruant and her seven daysκαὶ γυνή ἥτις ἐὰν ᾖ ῥέουσα …
Section C (vv. 19–24) opens with the menstruant: a woman with a flow of blood (ῥέουσα αἵματι) is unclean seven days in her ἄφεδρος ('separation / seclusion'), and whoever touches her is unclean until evening. The periphrastic ᾖ ῥέουσα ('be flowing') renders the Hebrew participle; ἄφεδρος (lit. 'the sitting-apart') is the LXX's term for the menstrual state (נִדָּה), highlighting the woman's removal from ordinary contact.

And if a woman has a flow of blood for many days, not at the time of her menstrual separation, or if she flows beyond her menstruation, all the days of the flow of her uncleanness shall be just as the days of her menstruation; she shall be unclean.

New section (D): the prolonged flow of bloodκαὶ γυνή ἐὰν ῥέῃ ῥύσει αἵματος …
Section D (vv. 25–30) introduces the woman with a chronic flow of blood (ῥύσει αἵματος) outside or beyond her menstrual period — the precise condition of the hemorrhaging woman of Mark 5:25–34 (οὖσα ἐν ῥύσει αἵματος δώδεκα ἔτη). The cognate construction ῥέῃ ῥύσει (verb + cognate dative) is a Hebraism. Her impurity is assimilated to that of the menstruant (καθάπερ αἱ ἡμέραι τῆς ἀφέδρου), enduring all the days of the flow.

And you shall make the sons of Israel reverent of their uncleannesses, and they shall not die because of their uncleanness, by their defiling my tabernacle that is in their midst.

Theological climax: guarding the indwelling sanctuaryκαὶ εὐλαβεῖς ποιήσετε …
The theological center of the chapter, shifting to second-person plural address (ποιήσετε) to Moses and Aaron: Israel must be made reverent (εὐλαβεῖς) of their impurities lest they die by defiling YHWH's tabernacle that dwells in their midst (τὴν σκηνήν μου τὴν ἐν αὐτοῖς). The discharge-laws matter precisely because accumulated impurity threatens the holiness of the indwelling sanctuary; the articular infinitive ἐν τῷ μιαίνειν marks the defilement as the cause of the deadly danger.

Subscription (E): legal summary, part 1οὗτος ὁ νόμος τοῦ γονορρυοῦς …
The subscription opens (cf. the heading at v. 3): οὗτος ὁ νόμος ('this is the law') gathers the chapter's cases. Verse 32 recapitulates the first two: the man with the discharge (τοῦ γονορρυοῦς, vv. 2–15) and the man with an emission of seed (κοίτη σπέρματος, vv. 16–18), the result clause ὥστε μιανθῆναι ('so as to be defiled') summarizing the defiling effect. Verse 33 completes the list with the female cases.

Subscription (E): legal summary, part 2 (the female cases and the consort)καὶ τῇ αἱμορροούσῃ …
The subscription's second half completes the catalogue: the woman with a flow of blood in her menstruation (τῇ αἱμορροούσῃ ἐν τῇ ἀφέδρῳ), the man with a discharge (resumed), the comprehensive 'male or female' (τῷ ἄρσενι ἢ τῇ θηλείᾳ), and the man who lies with a woman set apart (μετὰ ἀποκαθημένης). The participle αἱμορροούσῃ ('hemorrhaging') is the very LXX lexeme behind the Synoptic αἱμορροοῦσα (Matt 9:20) for the woman healed by touching Jesus' garment, and ἀποκαθημένη ('one sitting apart') is a synonym for the menstruant in her seclusion.
