Leviticus 3 sets out the ritual of the θυσία σωτηρίου, the 'sacrifice of deliverance / well-being,' the LXX's rendering of Hebrew זֶבַח שְׁלָמִים (the 'peace-' or 'fellowship-offering').

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Leviticus 3 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs–Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Leviticus 3 sets out the ritual of the θυσία σωτηρίου, the 'sacrifice of deliverance / well-being,' the LXX's rendering of Hebrew זֶבַח שְׁלָמִים (the 'peace-' or 'fellowship-offering'). The chapter is built as three parallel cases distinguished by the victim — herd cattle (ἐκ τῶν βοῶν, vv. 1–5), a sheep / lamb from the flock (ἀπὸ τῶν προβάτων … ἄρνα, vv. 6–11), and a goat (ἀπὸ τῶν αἰγῶν, vv. 12–16) — capped by a perpetual statute against eating fat and blood (v. 17). The Greek translator renders שְׁלָמִים by the abstract noun σωτήριον ('deliverance / salvation / well-being'), so that what Hebrew names by its social effect (peace, wholeness) the LXX names by its theological ground (deliverance wrought by the LORD); the rite's verbal armature is heavily future-indicative (προσάξει, ἐπιθήσει, σφάξει, ἀνοίσει), the legislative future characteristic of Pentateuchal cultic prescription, where 'he shall do' functions as binding instruction rather than mere prediction. The defining technical vocabulary clusters here: κάρπωμα ('burnt portion / offering by fire,' rendering אִשֶּׁה), στέαρ ('fat,' חֵלֶב), the anatomical inventory of νεφροί ('kidneys'), the λοβὸς τοῦ ἥπατος ('lobe of the liver,' יֹתֶרֶת הַכָּבֵד), the μηρία ('loins / flanks'), and in the flock-case the ὀσφύς ('fat tail / rump,' אַלְיָה) removed σὺν ταῖς ψόαις ('with the loins'). The fat is the LORD's exclusive portion, turned to smoke as an ὀσμὴ εὐωδίας ('aroma of fragrance,' רֵיחַ נִיחֹחַ), a metonymy for divine acceptance recurring at vv. 5, 11, 16. Two text-internal features deserve note: at v. 9 the recipient is named τῷ θεῷ ('to God') rather than the κυρίῳ ('to the LORD') of the parallel verses, a variation in the divine designation within an otherwise formulaic frame; and v. 17 universalizes the rite's fat-and-blood logic into a νόμιμον αἰώνιον binding 'throughout your generations in all your dwellings' — the seed of the dietary blood-prohibition developed at Lev 7:22–27 and 17:10–14 and ultimately echoed in the apostolic decree of Acts 15:20, 29.

ἐὰν δὲ θυσία σωτηρίου τὸ δῶρον αὐτοῦ τῷ κυρίῳ ἐὰν μὲν ἐκ τῶν βοῶν αὐτοῦ προσαγάγῃ ἐάν τε ἄρσεν ἐάν τε θῆλυ ἄμωμον προσάξει αὐτὸ ἐναντίον κυρίου

And if his gift to the LORD is a sacrifice of deliverance, if he should offer it from the herd, whether male or female, he shall present it unblemished before the LORD.

New legislative case (protasis introducing the peace-offering instruction)ἐὰν δὲ θυσία σωτηρίου
δέ marks the transition from the burnt- and grain-offering legislation of chs. 1–2 to a new sacrificial class. The conditional ἐάν + subjunctive (προσαγάγῃ) is the standard casuistic frame of Pentateuchal cultic law ('if anyone offers …, then he shall …'); the nested ἐὰν μέν … sets up the herd-case as the first of three parallel victim-options, with the inner ἐάν τε … ἐάν τε pair ('whether … or') admitting either sex — a permission notably broader than the male-only requirement of the whole-burnt-offering (1:3).

ἐὰνifconditional conjunction (introducing casuistic protasis)→ discourse linkage or contrastἐάν: 'if'; with the subjunctive it frames the standard casuistic conditional of Levitical law; here it opens the whole peace-offering pericope, the apodosis arriving at προσάξει.
δὲnow / andnarrative/legislative continuative (post-positive)→ discourse linkage or contrastδέ: post-positive particle marking the move to a new sacrificial class (the θυσία σωτηρίου) after the burnt- and grain-offerings of chs. 1–2.
θυσίαsacrificeNominativepredicate nominative (with implied copula: '[if] his gift is a sacrifice')→ participant prominenceθυσία: 'sacrifice / offering'; renders זֶבַח; in construct with σωτηρίου it names the זֶבַח שְׁלָמִים, the shared sacrificial meal whose portions are divided between altar, priest, and offerer (cf. Lev 7:11–34).
σωτηρίουof deliverance / of well-beingGenitivegenitive of definition (qualifying θυσία: 'sacrifice of deliverance')→ relational specificationσωτήριον: 'deliverance / salvation / well-being'; the LXX's standard rendering of שְׁלָמִים (peace-/fellowship-offering); the translator names the rite by its theological ground (deliverance from the LORD) rather than its social effect (peace/wholeness); the genitive θυσία σωτηρίου is the chapter's leitmotif (vv. 1, 3, 6, 9).

δῶρονgift / offeringNominativesubject ('his gift')→ participant prominenceδῶρον: 'gift / offering'; renders קָרְבָּן ('that which is brought near'); the LXX's preferred term for the worshipper's presented offering throughout Leviticus; here the subject of the implied 'is.'
αὐτοῦhisGenitivegenitive of possession (modifying δῶρον)→ relational specificationαὐτός: the genitive pronoun marks the offering as belonging to the individual worshipper whose voluntary act sets the rite in motion.
τῷto theDativearticle (with κυρίῳ)→ noun-phrase markingτῷ: Greek article marking definiteness and the role of the accompanying noun phrase.
κυρίῳLORDDativedative of recipient (the offering is brought 'to the LORD')→ sphere or referenceκύριος: the standard LXX rendering of the Tetragrammaton יהוה; the dative of advantage names the divine recipient toward whom the whole rite is oriented.
ἐὰνifconditional conjunction (inner protasis with μέν: 'if on the one hand')→ discourse linkage or contrastἐάν: the inner conditional, paired with μέν, isolates the first of the three victim-options (the herd-case) anticipated by the δέ-cases of vv. 6 and 12.
μὲνindeed / on the one handcorrelative particle (anticipating the δέ-cases of vv. 6, 12)→ discourse linkage or contrastμέν: post-positive particle setting up a correlative contrast; the answering δέ falls at v. 6 (ἐὰν δὲ ἀπὸ τῶν προβάτων), structuring the chapter's three victim-cases.
ἐκfrompreposition + genitive (source: 'from the herd')→ spatial or relational framingἐκ: 'from / out of'; with the genitive it specifies the source-flock from which the victim is drawn.
τῶνtheGenitivearticle (with βοῶν)→ noun-phrase markingτῶν: Greek article marking definiteness and the role of the accompanying noun phrase.
βοῶνcattle / herdGenitivegenitive object of ἐκ (source: the herd)→ relational specificationβοῦς (gen. pl. βοῶν): 'ox / cow / head of cattle'; renders בָּקָר ('herd'); the large-cattle option is the most costly of the three victim-classes, opening the sequence.
αὐτοῦhisGenitivegenitive of possession (the offerer's own herd)→ relational specificationαὐτός: the pronoun stresses that the animal comes from the worshipper's own possessions — a costly gift of his own substance.

ἐάνwhetherdisjunctive conditional (first member of ἐάν τε … ἐάν τε: 'whether … or')→ clausal contributionἐάν (with τε): in the correlative ἐάν τε … ἐάν τε construction it functions as 'whether … or,' admitting either sex of victim.
τεboth / andcorrelative particle (ἐάν τε … ἐάν τε)→ discourse linkage or contrastτε: enclitic correlative; the doubled τε links the two permitted options (male or female) as equally acceptable.
ἄρσενmaleAccusativeaccusative (option of the victim's sex: 'male')→ object specificationἄρσην: 'male'; renders זָכָר; unlike the whole-burnt-offering (1:3, male only), the peace-offering admits either sex, a sign of its more festive, less strictly expiatory character.
ἐάνor whetherdisjunctive conditional (second member: 'or')→ clausal contributionἐάν (with τε): the second member of the disjunction, introducing the alternative option.
τεorcorrelative particle (second τε of the pair)→ discourse linkage or contrastτε: enclitic correlative completing the 'whether … or' pairing.
θῆλυfemaleAccusativeaccusative (alternative option of sex: 'female')→ object specificationθῆλυς: 'female'; renders נְקֵבָה; the explicit permission of a female victim distinguishes the peace-offering from the burnt-offering and reflects its function as a voluntary fellowship-meal.
ἄμωμονunblemishedAccusativepredicate/attributive adjective (modifying αὐτό: 'present it unblemished')→ object specificationἄμωμος: 'without blemish / spotless'; renders תָּמִים; the cardinal requirement of all sacrificial victims (Lev 22:19–25); only a flawless animal is fit for the LORD, a motif the NT applies christologically (1 Pet 1:19; Heb 9:14).

And he shall lay his hands on the head of the gift and slaughter it beside the doors of the tent of witness, and the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall pour the blood around upon the altar of the whole-burnt-offerings.

Ritual sequence (hand-laying, slaughter, blood-manipulation)καὶ ἐπιθήσει
The verse chains the three core gestures of the rite by Hebraizing καί-parataxis: (1) the offerer lays his hands on the victim's head (identification/dedication), (2) slaughters it at the tent-door, and (3) the priests dash the blood around the altar. The shift from the offerer's singular acts (ἐπιθήσει, σφάξει) to the priests' plural blood-act (προσχεοῦσιν) marks the division of cultic labor: the lay worshipper kills, but only the priests handle the blood at the altar.

And they shall present from the sacrifice of deliverance an offering by fire to the LORD: the fat that covers the belly and all the fat that is upon the belly,

Specification of the LORD's portion (the fat parts to be burned)καὶ προσάξουσιν
The verse begins the inventory of the κάρπωμα — the fat portions reserved for the LORD and turned to smoke on the altar. The partitive ἀπὸ τῆς θυσίας ('from the sacrifice') signals that only a part of the peace-offering goes to the altar; the rest is shared by priest and offerer (Lev 7:15–18, 31–34), which is what distinguishes the σωτήριον from the wholly-consumed ὁλοκαύτωμα. The first item is the great omental fat (τὸ στέαρ τὸ κατακαλύπτον τὴν κοιλίαν).

Continuation of the fat-inventory (kidneys, flank-fat, liver-lobe)καὶ τοὺς δύο νεφροὺς
The verse completes the catalogue of the LORD's portion begun in v. 3, adding the two kidneys with their fat at the flanks and the lobe of the liver. The string of accusatives (νεφρούς, στέαρ, λοβόν) all hang on the verb περιελεῖ ('he shall remove') held to the very end of the verse — a periodic Hebraizing word-order that suspends the governing verb after its objects. This same anatomical inventory recurs verbatim for the goat (vv. 14–15) and, with the fat tail added, for the lamb (vv. 9–10).

And the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall offer them up upon the altar, upon the whole-burnt-offerings, upon the wood that is on the fire upon the altar — an offering by fire, an aroma of fragrance to the LORD.

Climax of the herd-rite: the fat turned to smoke as a pleasing aromaκαὶ ἀνοίσουσιν
The herd-case closes with the priests burning the fat-portions on the altar. The fourfold ἐπί ('upon the altar … upon the burnt-offerings … upon the wood … upon the fire') layers the fat atop the daily whole-burnt-offering, so the σωτήριον fat ascends with the continual עֹלָה. The verse ends with the verbless cultic formula κάρπωμα ὀσμὴ εὐωδίας κυρίῳ ('an offering by fire, an aroma of fragrance to the LORD'), the standard expression of divine acceptance (cf. Gen 8:21).

Sub-case of the flock-offering: the lamb specificallyἐὰν ἄρνα προσαγάγῃ
A nested protasis narrowing the flock-case to a lamb (ἄρνα). The structure mirrors v. 1 in miniature (conditional προσαγάγῃ followed by legislative προσάξει), and prepares for the lamb's distinctive feature — the offering of the whole fat tail — detailed in v. 9. The change of preposition from ἐναντίον (v. 1) to ἔναντι is purely stylistic; both render לִפְנֵי ('before').

And he shall lay his hands on the head of his gift and slaughter it beside the doors of the tent of witness, and the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall pour the blood around upon the altar.

Ritual sequence for the lamb (parallel to v. 2)καὶ ἐπιθήσει
The flock-rite repeats the herd-rite of v. 2 almost verbatim: hand-laying, slaughter at the tent-door, and the priests' blood-dashing around the altar. The single difference is the omission of τῶν ὁλοκαυτωμάτων ('of the whole-burnt-offerings') after θυσιαστήριον — the altar is named simply 'the altar.' The verbatim repetition is a feature of priestly legal style, reinforcing the fixed, non-negotiable shape of the rite across all three victim-classes.

The fat-inventory for the lamb parallels vv. 3–4 but adds a feature unique to sheep: the entire fat tail (ἡ ὀσφύς, Hebrew אַלְיָה), the large fatty appendage of the broad-tailed sheep, removed close by the backbone (σὺν ταῖς ψόαις). Notably, here alone the recipient is named τῷ θεῷ ('to God') rather than the κυρίῳ ('to the LORD') of the parallel verses (3, 5, 11, 14, 16) — a variation in divine designation within the otherwise formulaic frame.

Continuation of the lamb fat-inventory (kidneys, flank-fat, liver-lobe)καὶ ἀμφοτέρους τοὺς νεφροὺς
The inventory matches v. 4 almost exactly, with two differences: ἀμφοτέρους ('both') replaces δύο ('two') for the kidneys, and the verse closes with the aorist participle περιελών ('having removed') rather than the finite future περιελεῖ. The participle leaves v. 10 grammatically open, its main verb supplied by ἀνοίσει at the head of v. 11 — so vv. 10–11 form a single sentence: 'having removed [these], the priest shall offer them up.'

ἀνοίσει supplies the main verb left pending by the participle περιελών of v. 10. The closing nominal formula ὀσμὴ εὐωδίας κάρπωμα κυρίῳ ('an aroma of fragrance, an offering by fire to the LORD') matches v. 5 but in inverted order (aroma before offering), the standard mark of divine acceptance. Third legislative case (the goat-offering)ἐὰν δὲ ἀπὸ τῶν αἰγῶν
The third and last victim-case, introduced by ἐὰν δέ parallel to v. 6. The protasis is highly compressed (no verb of offering in the 'if'-clause, only the source), and the apodosis opens with an unexpected καί ('and/also') before προσάξει — a Hebraizing apodotic καί (the waw of the apodosis), where Greek would normally have no conjunction. The terseness reflects that the goat-rite simply repeats the established pattern.

Ritual sequence for the goat (parallel to vv. 2, 8)καὶ ἐπιθήσει
The goat-rite repeats the now-fixed pattern, with two notable variants: ἐπὶ τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ ('on its head') uses the pronoun rather than 'of the gift'; and the slaughter-verb is plural σφάξουσιν ('they shall slaughter') with the added phrase ἔναντι κυρίου ('before the LORD'). The plural slaughter-verb (against the singular σφάξει of vv. 2, 8) is a minor inconsistency typical of the casuistic style, perhaps generalizing the agent.

The goat fat-inventory matches v. 3 (the herd-case) almost verbatim, identifying the same visceral fat. The phrase ἐπ᾿ αὐτοῦ ('from it / upon it') is slightly awkward; it most likely means 'from it (the victim)' he shall offer up the portion. The goat-rite thus replicates the herd-pattern exactly (vv. 14–15 = vv. 3–4), confirming the fixed shape of the rite across all victim-classes.

νόμιμον εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα εἰς τὰς γενεὰς ὑμῶν ἐν πάσῃ κατοικίᾳ ὑμῶν πᾶν στέαρ καὶ πᾶν αἷμα οὐκ ἔδεσθε

It is a perpetual statute throughout your generations in all your dwellings: you shall eat no fat and no blood at all.

Closing perpetual statute (legislative coda generalizing the rite)νόμιμον εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα
The chapter closes with a categorical, sanctuary-independent law: the prohibition of eating fat and blood is a νόμιμον αἰώνιον binding 'throughout your generations in all your dwellings.' The verbless heading νόμιμον εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα stands as a legislative formula, and the prohibitive future οὐκ ἔδεσθε ('you shall not eat') functions as an absolute command (equivalent to the Decalogue's οὐ + future). The fat-and-blood prohibition is developed at Lev 7:22–27 and 17:10–14 and echoed in the apostolic decree (Acts 15:20, 29) — a crux for the relation of the Mosaic dietary law to the gentile church.

νόμιμονa statute / lawful ordinanceNominativenominative (verbless legislative heading: '[it is] a statute')→ participant prominenceνόμιμον: 'statute / legal ordinance / what is lawful'; substantivized neuter of νόμιμος; renders חֻקָּה ('statute'); the phrase νόμιμον εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ('a perpetual statute') is the LXX's standard rendering of חֻקַּת עוֹלָם, marking a permanent, non-abrogable cultic law.
εἰςfor / untopreposition + accusative (extent of time: 'forever')→ spatial or relational framingεἰς + acc.: 'unto / for'; with τὸν αἰῶνα it expresses perpetual duration.
τὸνtheAccusativearticle (with αἰῶνα)→ noun-phrase markingτὸν: Greek article marking definiteness and the role of the accompanying noun phrase.
αἰῶναage / foreverAccusativeaccusative object of εἰς (duration: 'forever')→ object specificationαἰών: 'age / eternity'; renders עוֹלָם; εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ('forever / perpetually') marks the statute as binding for all time, not merely the wilderness generation.
εἰςthroughout / untopreposition + accusative (extent: 'throughout your generations')→ spatial or relational framingεἰς + acc.: 'unto / throughout'; with τὰς γενεὰς it expresses the law's reach across all succeeding generations.
τὰςtheAccusativearticle (with γενεὰς)→ noun-phrase markingτὰς: Greek article marking definiteness and the role of the accompanying noun phrase.
γενεὰςgenerationsAccusativeaccusative object of εἰς (extent: 'your generations')→ object specificationγενεά: 'generation'; renders דּוֹר; the phrase εἰς τὰς γενεὰς ὑμῶν ('throughout your generations') extends the statute to all Israel's posterity (cf. לְדֹרֹתֵיכֶם).
ὑμῶνyourGenitivegenitive of possession (modifying γενεὰς: 'your generations')→ relational specificationσύ (gen. pl. ὑμῶν): 'your'; the second-person plural addresses all Israel, shifting from the third-person casuistic 'he' of the rite to a direct, communal command.
ἐνinpreposition + dative (locative: 'in every dwelling')→ spatial or relational framingἐν + dat.: 'in'; locates the prohibition not at the sanctuary but in every place of Israelite habitation.
πάσῃevery / allDativeadjective (modifying κατοικίᾳ: 'every dwelling')→ sphere or referenceπᾶς: 'all / every'; ἐν πάσῃ κατοικίᾳ ('in every dwelling') universalizes the law geographically, beyond the cult-center into ordinary domestic life.
κατοικίᾳdwelling / habitationDativedative object of ἐν (place: 'in your dwelling')→ sphere or referenceκατοικία: 'dwelling / settlement / habitation'; renders מוֹשָׁב; the term marks the prohibition as applying everywhere Israel lives, decisively extending the fat-and-blood law from the altar into the household.
ὑμῶνyourGenitivegenitive of possession (modifying κατοικίᾳ: 'your dwellings')→ relational specificationσύ (gen. pl. ὑμῶν): 'your'; again the communal second-person, binding every Israelite household.
πᾶνall / anyAccusativeadjective (modifying στέαρ: 'all/any fat')→ object specificationπᾶς: 'all / every / any'; with the negated verb, πᾶν … οὐκ is a Hebraism for 'none at all' (כָּל … לֹא), an absolute prohibition rather than a partial one.
στέαρfatAccusativedirect object of ἔδεσθε (first prohibited item)→ object specificationστέαρ: 'fat / suet' (cf. v. 3); the LORD's exclusive sacrificial portion is therefore forbidden as human food; the law of Lev 7:23–25 specifies that this concerns the fat of sacrificial animals.
καὶandcoordinate conjunction (linking the two prohibited items)→ discourse linkage or contrastκαὶ: meaning 'and'; conjunction or particle linking this unit with the surrounding discourse.
πᾶνall / anyAccusativeadjective (modifying αἷμα: 'all/any blood')→ object specificationπᾶς: 'all / every / any' (cf. above); with the negation, 'no blood at all'; the absolute Hebraism πᾶν … οὐκ governs both items.
αἷμαbloodAccusativedirect object of ἔδεσθε (second prohibited item)→ object specificationαἷμα: 'blood' (cf. v. 2); the blood, as the seat of life (Lev 17:11, 14), is reserved for atonement and forbidden as food; this is the seed of the developed blood-law of Lev 17:10–14 and the one Levitical food-law carried into the apostolic decree (Acts 15:20, 29).
οὐκnotnegative particle (with the prohibitive future ἔδεσθε)→ discourse linkage or contrastοὐ (οὐκ before vowel): the objective negative; with the future indicative it forms the absolute legislative prohibition ('you shall not …'), as in the Decalogue (οὐ + future).
ἔδεσθεyou shall eatFut Mid Indic 2 Pl · ἐσθίωmain verb (prohibitive future addressed to all Israel)→ prohibitive future (absolute legislative command: 'you shall not eat')ἐσθίω (fut. mid. ἔδομαι): 'eat'; the deponent future ἔδεσθε ('you will eat'), negated by οὐκ, functions as a categorical prohibition — the strongest form of command, equivalent to the Decalogue's οὐ + future; renders לֹא תֹאכֵלוּ; this fat-and-blood prohibition becomes a defining marker of Israelite (and later, in the blood-clause, of gentile-Christian) dietary practice.
